YANTA is built local-first. Your notes live on your device as plain files you own — YANTA has no servers, collects no personal data, and includes no telemetry.
The short version
YANTA is a note-taking app that runs entirely on your computer. Your notes are stored as plain JSON files in a folder on your device that only you can access. We don't have servers, don't collect data, and can't see your notes — by design. There is no sign-up, no account, and no tracking.
Information we do not collect
YANTA does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. Specifically:
- No telemetry or usage analytics. We don't track which features you use, how often you open the app, or what you do with your notes.
- No user accounts or sign-in. YANTA has no login system. You don't create an account, and we don't store any credentials.
- No advertising or profiling. We don't sell your data, show you ads, or build a profile about you.
- No cloud synchronization. YANTA doesn't sync your notes to any server or cloud service run by us.
- No crash reporting or error logging. We don't collect diagnostic data when the app encounters errors.
Where your notes are stored
All your notes are stored on your device in a single folder: ~/.yanta/vault/. Each note is a plain JSON file that you can open and read with any text editor. This folder belongs to you — you have complete access to it, can back it up, move it, edit it, or delete it at any time.
YANTA also maintains a local search index on your device to power full-text search. It is stored on your device, used only for search within the app, and is never transmitted anywhere.
Network connections
YANTA is designed to work offline and makes no automatic network connections. The only optional network activity is:
- Manual update checks. You can choose to check for new versions of YANTA from the app menu. When you do, YANTA connects to GitHub Releases to check for available updates. This check is entirely optional and manual — it never happens in the background. If you trigger an update check, you will see GitHub's privacy practices apply.
No other network calls are made by YANTA. We have no servers to contact and no services to report to.
Third-party services
YANTA itself does not use third-party services for analytics, crash reporting, or data processing. However, if you manually check for updates, you connect to GitHub. When you visit GitHub, their privacy policy applies. Please review GitHub's Privacy Statement for details on how they handle traffic and data.
Your control over your data
Because YANTA stores all notes locally on your device, you have complete control:
- Backup. You can copy the
~/.yanta/vault/folder to a USB drive, external hard drive, or cloud storage service of your choice at any time. - Sync. You can use your own tools (Git, Dropbox, Syncthing, etc.) to sync your vault across devices. YANTA doesn't interfere with this.
- Export. Since notes are plain JSON files, you can read them, export them, or convert them to other formats using any text editor or script.
- Delete. Deleting the
~/.yanta/vault/folder permanently removes all your notes from your device.
Children's privacy
YANTA is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone. Because YANTA does not collect any data whatsoever, this applies equally to all users, regardless of age.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy occasionally to reflect changes to YANTA's features or practices. If we make material changes, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Your continued use of YANTA after changes become effective constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
